LESSON 2: PERSONALITY
Welcome back students! After finishing with some basic stuff, in the following lessons of Career Advice we are going to focus in more interesting things that will pertain to you more and will help you to know yourselves better, which eventually will lead you to an accurate career choice. Lesson 2 is all about personality, so let’s begin!
PERSONALITY AND CAREER
Not all jobs are for everyone, and believe it or not, your success or failure in certain activities depends, in some way, on your personality, although other factors like abilities and aptitudes also play an important role.
So, when they ask us about our personality, we tend to describe ourselves and start naming our qualities and characteristics: I am shy, I am very positive, I am stubborn, I second-guess myself, I am fabulous, I am smart and critical; I am very friendly, etc. And sure, that is good way to express or to identify our personality, but there is more than that! Jung and Myers will tell you all the things you need to know!

THE FOUR PREFERENCES
Carl Jung and Isabel Briggs Myers developed their personality type theory in which they identified four different kinds of preferences:
1. Extraversion and Introversion.
Refers to the “two worlds” in which we live:
EXTRAVERSION: We are dealing with the world outside of ourselves. Ex: talking to other people, listening to what someone is saying, working on a car.
INTROVERSION: When we are in the world inside ourselves, dealing with what it’s inside our minds. Ex: reading a book, thinking about what we want to say or do, being aware of how we feel.
2. Sensing and Intuition.
Refers to how we gather information, and perceive data:
SENSING: Absorbing data in a literal, concrete fashion, relying mostly on our five senses. Ex: tasting food, noticing a stoplight has changed, following steps in a plan.
INTUITION: Generating abstract possibilities from the information that is gathered. Ex: thinking about consequences, coming up with new ideas, perceiving underlying meaning on what people say or do.
3. Thinking and Feeling.
Refers to the type of criteria we use when making decisions:
THINKING: Decisions based on logic and reason, based on what you believe is correct from pre-defined rules of behavior. Ex: researching a product and buying the best one that meets our needs, choosing not to buy a red hat we like only because we already have two red hats.
FEELING: Decisions are made in a subjective manner based on what we believe is correct depending on our value system. Ex: deciding not to take a job because we don’t like the work environment, deciding to move closer to someone we care about.
4. Judging and Perceiving.
Refers to our attitude towards the “external world”, the way we live on a day-to-day basis:
JUDGING: Prefers things to be neat, organized, established, and settled. Ex: making a list of things to do, scheduling things in advanced, bringing closure to an issue to keep moving on.
PERCEIVING: Prefers things to be flexible and spontaneous. Ex: deciding what to do as we do it, doing things at last minute, postponing decisions to see what other options are available.

THE 16 PERSONALITY TYPES
According to Jung and Briggs Myers, from each pair of preferences there is one that we feel more attracted to or define us better. Are we Thinkers or Feelers? Are we Sensing or Intuitive? If we mix all the different combinations we get a total of 16 different kinds of personality types. Which one is yours? You will find out when you do your assignment!
1. ISTJ (Introvert, Sensing, Thinking, Judging) – “The Duty Fulfillers”:
Serious, quiet, achieve success through concentration and thoroughness. Practical, organized, casual, realistic and trustworthy. Make themselves sure that everything is organized. Accept responsibilities. Decide by their own means what they have to do and work persistently towards that direction without being distracted until they reach their goal. ISTJs have one character trait that puts them at a definite advantage in terms of career success: Perserverance.
Career Advice: ISTJs are suitable for executive and management areas. Jobs like Ministry Worker, Unspeakable, Auror, Healer, are good matches for ISTJs.
2. ESTJ (Extrovert, Sensing, Thinking, Judging) – “The Guardians”:
Practical, realistic, casual, with an inclination towards businesses or mechanics. They are not interested in subjects that don’t have practicality, but they are dedicated workers when they have to be. They like to organize and plan activities. They can be good managers, especially if they remember to take into account the feelings and points of view of other people.
Career Advice: ESTJs are good at a lot of different things, because they put forth a tremendous amount of effort towards doing things the right way, but they will be happiest in leadership positions. Jobs like Head of Department at the Ministry of Magic, Auror, Unspeakable, Headmaster/Headmistress, are good matches for ESTJs.
3. ISFJ (Introvert, Sensing, Feeling, Judging) – “The Nurturers”:
Quiet, friendly, responsible, and conscientious. They work with devotion in order to fulfill their duties. They bring stability to any project or group. They are thorough, careful and precise. It is possible that they have difficulties learning technical stuff because their interests are not technical. They are patient with details and routine. They are loyal and care for the feelings of the others.
Career advice: ISFJs are extremely interested with how other people are feeling, and they enjoy creating structure and order. They can use their exceptional people-observation skills to determine what people want and then use their organizational abilities to create a structured plan for achieving what people want. Jobs like Welcomewitch/wizard at hospitals, Healer, Muggle Relations, Professor (Head of House), Librarian are good matches for ISFJs.
4. ESFJ (Extrovert, Sensing, Feeling, Judging) – “The Caregivers”:
They are affectionate, outspoken, popular, cooperative and active members in committees. They need harmony and when the environment lacks it they are pretty good at creating it. They are always doing something good for the others. They work better when they feel praise. They are not interested in abstract thinking or technical subjects. Their main interests are the things that affect others in a direct or visible way.
Career advice: ESFJs are extremely organized, enjoy creating order, and much of their self-satisfaction is gotten through giving and helping others. Jobs like Healer, Teacher, Librarian, Ministry worker are good matches for ESFJs.

They enjoy new experiences, dealing with people, and want to see an immediate result for their actions, that’s why they should choose careers that involve a lot of interaction with people, and do not require performing a lot of routine, detailed tasks. They have better skills in dealing with situations that require the use of common sense and practical ability with people and objects.
