VALUES
When speaking of values, we are talking about the ruling principles in your life. Psychologists use values scale to determine the values that people endorse in their lives. Also, these scales help us to understand the importance of each value in our lives, and how we strive toward fulfillment through work or other areas of our life.
ALLPORT-VERNON-LINDZEY STUDY OF VALUES
This scale is based on the view that understanding the individual’s value philosophy best captures the essence of a person, which basically means that your philosophy in life is determined by your values and convictions about what you think is important or not important in life. With that in mind, Gordon Allport, a psychologist from the USA, along with his colleagues Vernon and Lindzey, developed a new study of values which outlined six major value types. This study was published in 1960 and soon it became the third most important personality measure
THE 6 TYPES OF VALUES
Allport-Vernon-Lindzey Study of Values, recognizes 6 types of values, which are the following:
1. THEORETICAL – The discovery of truth: What you value is empiricism and intellectualism
2. ECONOMIC – What is most useful: Resourceful and practical affairs.
3. AESTHETIC – Form, beauty and harmony: Refers to grace and artistry in life.
4. SOCIAL – Love of people: Includes altruism, sympathy and caring.
5. POLITICAL – Power in all realms: characterized by influence and leadership.
6. RELIGIOUS – Unity of life: comprehension of life’s meaning, and holiness.
These 6 values can guide our life in one way or another, and depending on our preferences, some of them will be more important for us.
